Ealing Council offer a garden waste collection service, where you can have your cut grass, plant and hedge trimmings collected from your home. You must sign up and pay for this service. Renewals for April 2026 to March 2027 have been emailed and posted out; see how to renew below.
The council does not accept garden waste in the normal household rubbish collection.
Garden waste will be accepted free of charge for composting at the Greenford Road reuse and recycling centre and Abbey Road reuse and recycling centre
April 2026- March 2027 Subscription
We have made some significant changes and improvements to the garden waste collection service. As we introduce the updated service, there will be a change to the collection week pattern. This means some residents will have an initial 3-week gap from the end of March to mid-April. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please double-check your garden waste collection dates, as your collection pattern may not be what you're expecting. After this transition, the garden waste service will be a fortnightly collection service, except in winter, and all subscribers will receive the same number of collections.
Please check the following for the correct collection dates:
- your downloadable garden waste collection calendar is available here www.ealing.gov.uk/collectionday
- the sticker for your garden waste bin
The improvements to the garden waste service, includes:
- a lower annual subscription price
- a shorter winter pause, reduced from 11 weeks to 8 weeks
- new pro-rata subscription options for households joining in July or October
- pro-rata refunds available for residents who move out of the borough during the service year
Thank you for your patience while we make the transition to the 2026-27 garden waste subscription service.
Subscribers to the Garden waste service
When you subscribe or renew your garden waste subscription you will receive either a:
- Sticker with a calendar for each of your green garden waste wheeled bin subscriptions. This needs to be stuck on the top of each of your green wheeled bins.
- Tags for your garden waste sacks: Please attach these to the handle of each of your sacks.
The collection crews will only collect from bins with the garden waste calendar sticker on the lid and bags with a tag attached to the handle.
Postal garden waste subscribers
Some of our recent garden waste renewal letters were sent with the wrong name on the envelope due to an addressing error.
The letters were delivered to the correct address for your garden waste subscription, but were incorrectly addressed to a different contact. If you receive a letter with a name you do not recognise, please check it carefully. If the envelope has an Ealing Council return address on the back, it is likely to be your garden waste renewal notice.
We apologise for this error. To avoid this happening again, future garden waste communications for postal subscribers will be sent without personalisation.
What can I recycle?
Using the garden waste collection service you can use your wheeled bin, reusable or biodegradable sacks to recycle:
- grass cuttings
- old garden or house plants
- twigs
- hedge trimmings
- weeds and flowers
- leaves
You are not able to recycle:
- plastic pots, trays or bags
- soil, rocks and stones
- branches
- tree trunks, stumps, logs (larger than 15cm diameter)
- vegetable peelings or other food waste including fall fruit (these can be recycled using your green food bin)
Why recycle garden waste?
When put in with your rubbish, garden waste rots without air and creates methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Any garden waste mixed with rubbish cannot be used to make compost.
How will my garden waste be collected?
You have a choice of 3 container types:
- a 240 litre green wheeled bin
- 3 x 90 litre reusable sacks
- 25 or 75 compostable sacks
There is currently a limited supply of reusable sacks due to international shipping restrictions.
There is also a limited supply of compostable sacks for this service year.
Please put your garden waste directly into your wheeled bin, reusable bags or compostable sacks. Do not use plastic bags or other containers.
Label your reusable bags or wheeled bin with your property number.
Please try not to overfill your containers, as it can make them heavy and difficult to move.
The collection dates
Collections take place on the same day as your rubbish and recycling collection. Your garden waste will need to be presented at the front boundary of your property by 7am, as close to the pavement as possible.
Garden bins are emptied every 2 weeks, except during winter. The collections will pause in December 2026 and start again during February 2027. Please check your collection calendar for exact dates.
Everyone will receive a collection calendar setting out when collections will take place. The calendar will be available in your MyAccount if you manage your services online. Collection calendars will be posted to offline subscribers.
