What support is there for carers?

Carer's one-off grants scheme

One-off grants are available to support carers who look after another person.

You can apply for up to £150 per year - and put it toward things that help you as a carer. Examples of how carers use the grant include:

  • buying a mobile phone to stay in touch with home
  • purchasing household equipment like a washing machine or monitor
  • contribution toward the cost of taking a short break from your caring role
  • assistance with transport costs for getting to and from appointments
  • courses that give you 'safe' skills such as manual handaling and lifting
  • training or learning opportunities, so that you can pursue your own personal goals.

You can also use the grant to help pay for more expensive services or goods. For example, a combination towards the cost of a holiday or mini-break,where you pay the remaining sum from your own personal funds.

How often can I apply for funding?

The payment available per carer is £150 per year. Funds are limited so please note that the scheme is available on a first come, first served basis.

Eligibility

You can apply for a one-off carers grant if you are a carer, and:

  • a resident in the borough of Ealing and
  • provide ‘substantial’ care* and support to the cared for person aged 18 or over and
  • have declined a carers assessment **

*Substantial care is defined as the carer providing support to a cared for person that either reduces or delays the need for formal support services provided through the council; and where the carer provides direct care (such as personal care and domestic support) to the cared for person at least two to three times per week.

**Please note the one-off payment is for preventative purposes only and is not available as part of a carers personal budget or support plan following a completion of a carers assessment.
