From 7 June, rental electric scooters, also known as e-scooters, will be available to hire in Ealing as part of a London wide trial, co-ordinated by Transport for London and London Councils.
The trial will cover areas in Ealing and Acton to begin with and will only be able to be ridden in these areas.
The rental e-scooters are provided by three different operators:
The operators were chosen following an open and competitive process to assess their ability to meet strict safety requirements and high operating standards, conducted by Transport for London and London Councils.
The safety standards required go further than those set out at national level:
- Riders must be 18 or over and have a full or provisional driving licence to rent an e-scooter
- E-scooters will be capped with a maximum speed of 12.5mph
- Lights at the front and the rear of the vehicles that are always on throughout any rental
- Audible warning systems that can be used without adjusting the rider's grip of the handlebar.
E-scooters will need to be parked in designated bays by hirers and operators.
To rent an e-scooter, download the operators app which will be signposted on the e-scooter. All operators charge £1 to unlock the e-scooter, with charges of 15-20p per minute afterwards.
Legal use of electric scooters
The London rental e-scooter scheme is approved by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Rental e-scooters will be the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads, or in public spaces. Riding on pavements will still be banned.
It will still be illegal to use privately owned e-scooters, other than on private land with land-owners’ permission. The police will continue to carry out enforcement activity to deal with the illegal use of privately owned e-scooters.
Contacting and identifying e-scooter operators
Each operator's e-scooter is brightly coloured and has a unique ID number which will be labelled clearly on the vehicle. Should you need to report an abandoned vehicle, mis-parked e-scooter, or illegal pavement riding, please provide the date, time, location, colour of e-scooter, and e-scooter serial number, as this will help to resolve issues quicker.

Monitoring and evaluation
We will be closely monitoring the trial. If it does not meet the needs of residents and businesses, we will be able to stop taking part in the trial. If you would like to provide the council with feedback about the trial, please email email@example.com.
TfL has launched a London-wide consultation survey to collect feedback on the trial across the city. This feedback will be used to review and amend the trial.
