Most homes have a blue wheeled bin for recycling and some homes have communal recycling bins. All your recycling can be mixed together in these bins.
What you can put in recycling bin
You can recycle in your blue wheeled bin or communal recycling bin:
- cardboard and thin card - flatten cardboard to make more space in your recycling bin
- paper and envelopes
- newspapers and magazines
- plastic bottles, pots and tubs - including non-black plastic plant pots
- plastic tubes such as toothpaste tubes
- metal tins and cans
- aerosol cans
- clean foil and aluminium food trays - make sure they are bigger than a tennis ball size so that they can be recycled. If its smaller, it will be too small to sort and recycle
- glass bottles and jars
- food and drink cartons
Other items you can recycle
Some items must be recycled seperately:
- textiles and batteries: put these in a clear plastic bag and placed on top of your blue wheeled bin, never in the bin as that can cause fires in bin lorries and recycling centres
- food waste: put this in your green food waste bin; we collect food waste every week
- garden waste: do not put this in your recycling or rubbish bin - you can subscribe to the garden waste collection service or take it to a reuse and recycling centre
- soft plastics: do not put these in your recycling bin - this includes plastic bags, bread bags, crisp packets and other thin plastics. Many supermarkets collect soft plastics for recycling
- other ways to recycle and reuse
If your recycling bin has a white tag
A white tag on your recycling bin means your bin:
- contains something that cannot be recycled
- was not presented correctly for collection
- was not accessible to the collection crew
What you need to do
Do not report a tagged bin as a missed collection. The crew will not return to empty it.
To have your bin emptied on your next collection day:
- remove the incorrect item or items shown on the tag
- remove the white tag
- present your bin at the boundary of your property by 7am on your next scheduled recycling collection day
Important
You must remove all incorrect items before your next collection.
If you do not remove them, our collection crews may not empty your bin.
