Planning application process

Before you apply

Do I need planning permission?

The government’s Planning Portal provides an interactive guide on whether you need consent or permission for your project. It is important that you read this information carefully before applying. If you apply for the wrong consent, your application will be made invalid.

You are likely to need planning permission if you want to:

  • Build something new
  • Make a significant change to a building, like an extension
  • Change the use of a building.

Some building works do not need planning permission; this is known as 'permitted development'.

Do I need planning advice?

If you are considering carrying out development works or other proposals that require planning permission, you may need some planning advice. We offer a service with experienced planning officers to offer advice and help speed up the development process.
