The community benefits team provides advice and assistance on welfare benefits primarily for vulnerable client groups such as people with mental health needs, physical disabilities and older people.
The team provides help with:
- identifying appropriate benefits and services
- completing and submitting claims
- appeals and tribunal processes

The benefits advice line provides general advice about benefit entitlements, and is open to all residents of the borough.

The advice provided by the team is in accordance with legislation, statutory requirements and the council's policies and procedures.
To access our service a referral must be made by a professional in the health and/or social care sector.
While many referrals and made through the council's own care and support teams, they can also be made by other voluntary or community based groups. These are called external referrals and can be made through community mental health resource centres, adult day centres, and the health service.
To make a referral the professional will need to complete the referral form and read the accompanying guidance notes.

If we are unable to help, ie where there is a requirement for a service that we do not provide, we will identify and refer the client to an appropriate service.
