What support is there for carers?

Carer’s one off direct payment

You can get a one-off direct payment if you care for someone.

Carers one-off direct payments are available each year and awarded on a first come first serve basis.

You can apply for up to £150 and use this money to help you in your caring role.

You can use the payment to:

  • contribute toward the cost of a short break
  • purchase a mobile phone to stay in touch with home
  • purchase domestic equipment such as a washing machine or noise monitor
  • support with transport costs to enable a carer to attend appointments.
  • contribute towards the cost of carer related course such as a lifting and handling course
  • purchase an educational training course to support the carers own personal goals

To ensure flexibility, carers can also add their own funds to the ‘One-Off’ Direct Payment to purchase a more expensive service or goods. For instance the one-off Direct Payment can contribute to part of the cost of a holiday or weekend break with the carer topping up the remaining cost from their personal monies.

How often can I apply?

You can get £150 each year. The funds are limited, so it is given on a first come, first served basis.
