Benefits for carers

For detailed information about all benefits, visit Carers UK is also a good source of information about benefits.

Council tax support
Council tax support is a discount that helps people on low income to pay their council tax. The amount of support you get will depend on your circumstances and how much council tax you pay.

Council tax discount for carers
To qualify for this 25% discount you must provide care for at least 35 hours a week and:

  • live with the person you are caring for
  • not be the partner of the person you care for, or their parent if you care for a child under 18
  • care for someone who receives either the highest rate of the care component of the Disability Living Allowance, or the higher rate of Attendance Allowance or Constant Attendance Allowance

Please note: You don't have to claim Carer's Allowance to qualify for this discount. If there is more than one carer in the property, each carer might qualify for a discount. The carer's council tax discount can be backdated, so long as you met the conditions above in previous years. To apply for this contact the council tax office.

The carer's one off grants scheme
If you are a resident of Ealing and also a carer, you can apply for a one time grant to help pay for an item, service or course to support your health and wellbeing.

Handyperson's scheme
Now available to carers, you are eligible to receive up to five visits a year to help with minor repairs and improvements to your home. Conditions and limitations to the service apply.

Leisure Passes
As of 1 September 2015, carers are eligible for discounts on local leisure and recreation facilities. Discounts include library services such as dvd rentals and audiobooks, passes to local leisure centres and also golf courses. There are terms and conditions to the offer. Please check the leisure pass discounts page for more details.

Carer's parking permits
If you are a personal or professional carer, you can apply for a parking permit which will allow you to park for up to two hours on the street of the person you care for. These are issued on an annual basis and fees may apply.

To apply, complete the carer's permit application form and return it to parking services (address is on the form). Please fill in all of the information, include copies of additional documents needed, and your payment. Applications take approximately 10 days to be processed.
