Difficulty paying your bill

What happens if you don't pay your council tax

Do not ignore the bill as the sooner you get in touch, the more help and advice we will be able to offer. Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to reductions such as housing benefit or council tax support, or discretionary council tax discount. We may also be able to help by rescheduling your payments.

If your monthly instalments are not paid or you fail to contact council tax and agree a suitable repayment plan, recovery action may be taken against you which will increase the amount you have to pay considerably.

You may find it easier to manage payments by paying by direct debit. It will also save you time and help you avoid getting recovery notices for late payment.

Please note: You need to continue to pay the council tax on a monthly basis pending the assessment of any submitted applications for housing benefit or council tax support, or discretionary council tax discount as applications may not always be successful.
