Eligibility and how to apply
To be eligible for sheltered housing, you or your partner must be over 60 years old, or over 55 if registered disabled, and in need of housing support.
Your household income should be less than £60,000 and your capital assets should be less than £24,000.
You should be able to live independently with housing support and not need 24-hour care.
Also, you should be able to live in a close community without posing unmanageable risks to yourselves or others.
How to apply for sheltered housing
If you are a:
- council tenant, contact your neighbourhood housing officer who arrange to meet with you
- private tenant, contact the housing advice service on 020 8825 8888.
What happens next?
After applying, each application is individually considered to make sure sheltered housing is the best option for your needs.
The allocations panel, consisting of representatives from the sheltered housing management team and the allocations team, assesses all applications.
They may need information from doctors, social services, voluntary agencies, occupational therapists, or anyone providing services to you.
Once approved, you will become a member of the Locata scheme, a choice-based letting system that allows you to bid for properties. Look for the over 60s icon indicating sheltered housing.
