Housing for older people
Sheltered housing offers several benefits for residents. The accommodation is usually smaller and easier to manage, which can lead to savings on rent, fuel bills, and repair costs.
Each resident has their own bungalow or self-contained flat, connected by corridors to shared facilities like a common room, laundry, or guest room.
Facilities and activities vary by sheltered housing scheme but may include:
- private or communal gardens
- common rooms
- lifts, car parks
- laundry rooms
- guest rooms
Residents can participate in activities such as:
- coffee mornings
- Bingo
- fish and chip dinners
- exercise classes
Many residents also organise birthday parties, Christmas dinners, barbecues, and day trips to seaside towns or museums. Some events, like choir performances, are organised across multiple schemes.
Residents are encouraged to start their own activity groups through their resident association, which also plays a key role in scheme management and ensuring residents' voices are heard through regular meetings.
