Buying your council property
To apply to buy your council home, you must have spent a total of at least 3 years as a tenant of one or more of the following:
- an Ealing Council or other council-owned property
- a housing association property
- armed forces accommodation
If you have had any breaks as a tenant, you can still include previous tenancies in this 3-year total.
You may not be able to buy your council home if:
- your property has been specially adapted for elderly or disabled tenants
- you are in breach of any part of your tenancy agreement
- you have an un-discharged bankruptcy
- you are subject to a court order
Before you apply, we recommend that you seek legal advice and read the information on Right to Buy on GOV.UK
Buying a flat or maisonette
When you buy a flat or maisonette, you will get a 125-year lease from the council.
This means both you and the council have certain rights and duties regarding the property during this time.
Buying a house
If you are buying a house, you'll usually get full ownership (freehold) of both the house and the land it sits on.
If your house is part of a council estate, you might need to pay towards the upkeep of shared areas like paths and gardens.
