Council tax

Council tax is set by councils to help pay for local services such as refuse collection, schools and libraries. It is a property-based charge with one bill for each household. The amount payable depends on the band the property is placed into by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).

Council tax support is a discount that helps people on low income to pay their council tax. The amount of support you get will depend on your circumstances and how much council tax you pay. To see if you are eligible please complete a new claim form.

Annexe discount - new for 2014

From 1 April 2014 annexes used by the occupier of the main house as part of the main home, or annexes occupied by a relative of the person living in the main house will be entitled to a 50 per cent reduction in the council tax payable on the annexe. Find out if you qualify.
