Council tax is set by councils to help pay for local services such as refuse collection, schools and libraries. It is a property-based charge with one bill for each household. The amount payable depends on the band the property is placed into by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).

From 1 April 2014 annexes used by the occupier of the main house as part of the main home, or annexes occupied by a relative of the person living in the main house will be entitled to a 50 per cent reduction in the council tax payable on the annexe. Find out if you qualify.
