The Met Office provides the National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS) to alert the public and civil emergency authorities in advance of severe weather conditions, so that action may be taken to reduce the impact. Warnings are issued when significant disruption to transport and communication is expected, but the main driver is the potential risk to life and property.
