Register a birth

You must register your baby’s birth within 42 days.  

If your baby was born in the borough of Ealing, make an appointment with our register office by completing the online form.

Who can register the birth

The rules about who should come to the appointment depend on your relationship status. 

Parents are married or in a civil partnership 

If the baby's parents are married or in a civil partnership with each other: 

  • the mother can register the birth alone 
  • the father or second parent can register the birth alone 
  • both parents can register the birth together 

Parents are not married or in a civil partnership 

If the baby's parents are not married or in a civil partnership with each other: 

  • both parents must register the birth together for both to be included on the birth certificate 
  • the mother can register the birth alone (but the father or second parent will not be included on the birth certificate) 

Single parents 

The birth mother of the baby can register the birth. 

Fees 

It will cost £12.50 for each certificate. 

At your appointment you will also be asked for the: 

  • baby’s full name, sex, place and date of birth 
  • parents’ full names, place and date of birth 
  • mother’s maiden name (if she has one) 
  • parents' addresses and jobs 
  • date of the parents’ marriage or civil partnership (if applicable) 

If English is not your first language, you can bring a friend or relative to help, but you must register the birth yourself.

In some cases, if you cannot register the baby in the district where they were born, contact us to find out if we can help.
