Building and fire safety for council tenants and leaseholders

Gas safety

Ealing Council are responsible for ensuring all gas appliances are safe. We are legally required to do an annual gas safety check in all the homes we manage. This is also known as a Landlord Gas Safety Record or LGSR.

As part of your tenancy agreement with us, you must allow us access to your home to carry out this check. We can take court action against individuals that do not allow us access.

Potential risks of a poorly serviced gas appliance include gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

CO2 alarms

Your home may have a carbon monoxide (CO2) alarm. Remember to test it so you know the sound.

You could be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if:

  • an appliance is faulty or not properly installed or serviced
  • a room containing a gas appliance is poorly ventilated
  • chimneys or flues become blocked

In a gas emergency

If you think can smell gas or think there is a leak, contact the National Grid immediately on 0800 111 999.

Do:

  • turn off the gas supply at the meter
  • open all doors and windows

Do not:

  • smoke or vape
  • strike a match
  • turn electrical switches on or off
