Know your fire plan
No matter where you live, you should know what to do in the event of a fire.
If you live in a house and there is a fire, you should leave immediately and call 999 for the fire brigade.
If you live in a flat or maisonette in a purpose-built building, Fire Action Notices by the main entrances and exits tell you what to do in the event of a fire.
If there is a fire in your flat
If you live in a purpose-built building and a fire starts in your flat, you need to get everyone safely out.
Some homes offer multiple escape routes so know your best route and plan an alternative.
If the fire is not in your flat
In purpose-built buildings, the walls and doors between flats, stairs, and corridors are specially designed to resist fire and stop the spread of smoke. This is known as compartmentation. This means they should not be modified unless by approved council contractors.
If you live in a purpose-built building and there is a fire somewhere else in the building, often the best option is to stay indoors and call the fire brigade. This is known as a stay put strategy.
You are the best judge of your own safety. If in doubt, get out.
