Fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is the deliberate dumping of rubbish in a place where it shouldn't be left.

A fly-tip can be a single bag of rubbish, mattress or large amounts of builders' rubble.

Fly-tipping is illegal and we will take action against anyone we catch dumping rubbish.

Witnessing fly-tipping

Do not put yourself at risk by approaching anyone you witness illegally dumping rubbish.

Make a note of:

  • the time, date and location
  • registration or description of vehicle involved
  • description of people involved
  • the type and amount of waste dumped

Penalties and fines for fly-tippers

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence.

We will fine of prosecute people who dump rubbish in the street. It carries a maximum penalty of an unlimited fine or up to 5 years in prison.

We can issue fixed penalty notices (FPN) of £400.

It is also an offence to allow fly-tipping on your land or land that you rent.
