Collecting information on school traffic
Before most school streets are put in place data is usually collected using automatic traffic counts (ATCs). These are typically 2 rubber tubes, placed slightly apart from one another, across the road and they help to monitor the impact of the schemes.
These surveys provide data on traffic flow, traffic direction, speeds, and modal share across a 7-day period, at specific locations near to the school. This data is usually collected before a school street is put in place and then approximately 6 months after to understand any changes to traffic speed and volume in the local road network.
