Performance licences

Chaperone licences

To become a chaperone, you will need to apply for an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS).

As an individual, you cannot apply for an enhanced DBS check, this can only be done via organisations or companies.

More information about DBS can be found at GOV.UK

Chaperone responsibilities

  • priority is always to the child and their wellbeing

  • provide guidance, protection and support to the child

  • negotiate with production companies to protect the child's health and education

  • children should not perform if they are unwell

  • keep important contacts handy (licensing authorities, agent, parent or legal guardian)

  • maximum number of children that chaperones are allowed to have in their care is 12, but 8 is recommend number for better supervision

  • make sure a child has a licence before performing, do not assume they have one

  • if a production company cannot prove a child is licensed, report it to the council

  • production companies must log performance activities

Chaperone training

Once your licence is approved and before issuing, you will need to complete online training modules on data protection, health and safety and safeguarding children. These modules will be provided by the team issuing the licence.

Once your licence has been issued, you also need to complete within 3 months, either the protecting children in entertainment training for chaperones course provided by NSPCC learning or chaperone training course provided by Camden learning
