Ealing Council does not tolerate tenancy fraud.
The demand for social housing outweighs the number of available properties. The numbers of people in need is increasing and we are doing all we can to make sure the right people are in council homes.
Tenancy fraud is:
- a council tenant not using the property as their only or main home
- a council tenant sub-letting the whole of their home
- a council tenant sub-letting part of their property without consent from Ealing Council
- a council tenant giving false information or not telling us something when applying to buy a property through Right to Buy
- getting a council tenancy by giving false information when applying
- living in a property after someone has died or moved out, without the right to do so
Tenancy fraud is a crime and prosecution can include:
- a prison sentence of up to 2 years
- an unlimited fine
- an unlawful profit order, which recovers profits made from the fraud
- compensation orders, which recover money lost by the council because of the tenancy fraud
