Struggling to pay your rent

What happens if you do not pay your rent

If you fall behind on your rent ore repayment plan, we can contact you to talk about this, by either:

  • letter
  • telephone
  • visits
  • emails
  • text reminders

Our aim is to help you maintain your tenancy.

We will try to understand why you are not paying and, if needed, help you set up a repayment plan.

This plan will allow you to pay your rent each week or month, with a bit extra to reduce your arrears.

If you need more specialist help or are having general money worries, your rent officer can provide guidance and arrange debt and benefits advice.

Court action

If you do not contact the rents team, or do not keep to the repayment agreement, we may take court action.

Before doing this, we will always offer to meet with you to explain what will happen and your rights.

You will get a legal notice that tells you the amount of rent you owe and give you 4 weeks warning that we may apply for a possession order.

A possession order allows us to end your tenancy, meaning you could lose your home.

Going to court could also result in having to pay court costs, currently over £390. This may affect your chances of getting credit in the future.
