Why is it important to let the council know?
It is estimated that many thousands of children in England and Wales are privately fostered, but most do not come to the attention of local councils. This means that children, their parents and carers can miss out on a range of support and services available.
The council has a legal duty to check that any private fostering arrangement is safe and suitable and that the child is well cared for whilst living outside of their close family.
We know that some parents and carers may be initially worried about the council being notified. We also know that most parents and carers have found it to be a positive experience working with the private fostering team and appreciate the support on offer.
