Ealing Council is committed to building a vibrant and inclusive borough where everyone feels valued and heard. To support this aspiration, we need your help with developing a Community Charter. This is a document that sets out the rights and expectations of the borough’s residents, on how we can come together to make decisions about the things you care about, and how we can act together to make positive change in the borough. Your feedback will make sure the charter reflects your views and ideas and helps us to build trust and good communication with you, through better engagement.
Why are we consulting on a Community Charter?
Ealing is the 5th most diverse borough in London, with over 170 languages spoken across its 7 towns. Each town has a unique character, challenges, and opportunities. By working with you on developing the community charter, we can ensure it reflects the wants and needs of all communities, including people with one or more protected characteristics, as set out under the Equality Act (2010)
Working towards more inclusive engagement will help us achieve goals together, placing you at the centre of decision-making. It will mean that projects, policies and services available to our residents will better align with the diverse needs of the borough’s population and focus on those who are in the greatest need.
Community Charter Advisory Group
The Community Charter Advisory Group was set up in 2023 to oversee the development of the charter. They have been instrumental in designing the survey and the method for collecting feedback, to guarantee that diverse voices are included and given due weight in the design of the charter. This has extended to workshops with community groups that include people with one or more protected characteristics.
The 7 members represent a wide range of demographics and extensive experience in collaborating with local communities. They provide unbiased view and champion inclusivity:
- Aubrey Crawley was born in South Africa and immigrated to the UK (Ealing) in 1998 and has lived in West London ever since. After witnessing the closure of all local LGBTQ+ spaces over the years, he founded the West London Queer project in the summer of 2020.
- Janpal Basran works as the director of Southall Community Alliance (SCA). In this role he has developed projects addressing contemporary issues such as female genital mutilation, re-development of Spike Bridge park community cohesion, the establishment of Southall Food Hub, poverty alleviation, teaching of anti-racist history, and health and social isolation initiatives.
- Sharmarke Diriye is the programmes lead at Golden Opportunity Skills and Development (GOS&D), a progressive charity dedicated to engaging and supporting the socio-economic and health aspirations of marginalized communities. His commitment to empowering communities and fostering meaningful change is at the core of his work.
- Rahma Elmi is the operations and project manager at the Education and Skills Development Group (ESDEG). She devotes her time to empowering women to seek work and education, bridging the attainment gap in mainstream schools, and addressing isolation experienced by the elderly.
- Elly Heaton is the chief executive at Young Ealing Foundations. She is a qualified youth worker, an experienced charity leader, and is passionate about challenging inequality. She has worked in Ealing since 2018 and has particular expertise in fostering collaboration across sectors.
- June Martin leads the outreach and community engagement at the William Hobbayne Charity in Hanwell. She is passionate about fostering positive social change and supporting individuals and groups in need with the local community.
How you can get involved
We want to hear from you. Your insights, experiences, and suggestions are key to shaping the Community Charter. By completing the survey and sharing what you believe should be included in the charter and how we can better engage with you, your feedback will help to develop a charter that encourages an open, inclusive, and transparent relationship.
Deadline for completing the survey is 16 March 2025.
