Ealing Council is consulting on its draft pharmaceutical needs assessment, from 16 May until 15 July 2022. This consultation has now ended.
What is a pharmaceutical needs assessment (PNA)?
All health and wellbeing boards are required to produce an assessment of pharmaceutical services in its area every three years. Ealing’s next pharmaceutical needs assessment (PNA) is due by the end of the September 2022.
The PNA is a report of the present needs for pharmaceutical services. It is used to identify any gaps in current services or improvements that could be made in future pharmaceutical service provision. Pharmaceutical services include:
- Dispensing of medicines and appliances on prescription
- Sale of medicines to the public
- Providing advice to the public on medicines, coping with ill health or general health and well being
- Receiving waste medicines for safe destruction.
Who will use the pharmaceutical needs assessment?
The PNA will be used by NHS England, Ealing Council, and the Northwest London Clinical Commissioning Group to make decisions when applications for new pharmacies are received, and for the commissioning of other services that could be delivered by community pharmacies and other providers.
Who are we consulting and why?
After an initial consultation with residents, pharmacists and commissioners in November-December 2021 and a comprehensive review of existing data on community pharmacies in Ealing, a draft PNA has been produced by Soar Beyond, our partners tasked with producing the PNA. We are now seeking views on this draft PNA from everyone in Ealing who has an interest in the use or provision of pharmaceutical services.
Your comments will inform the final pharmaceutical needs assessment, which will be produced by 1 October 2022.

The consultation will be open from 16 May until 15 July 2022.
