Apply for charitable rate relief
Charities and community amateur sports clubs can apply for up to 80% off business rates if the property is used for charitable purposes.
You may be able to top up the discount to 100% off if you also apply for 'discretionary relief'
Before you start
You can apply if you are:
- a registered charity
- a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) registered with HMRC
- an unregistered charity like:
- church commissioner
- registered society
- boy scout and girl guide associations
- voluntary school
- any organisation recognised as a charity for tax reasons
You will need
- Your business rates account number
- Charity registration number and certificate (if registered)
- HMRC number and letter (for community amateur sports clubs)
Uploading supporting documents
We may ask you to upload some documents. For example, evidence of your charitable status such as a certificate from the charity commission, letter from HMRC. You can send:
- Word files (.docx)
- PDF files (.pdf)
- Excel files (.xlsx)
- Text files (.txt)
- Pictures from phones or tablets:
- JPEG (.jpg)
- GIF (.gif)
- PNG (.png)
as long as the file is smaller than 50MB. You cannot upload zip files.
What happens next
We will either lower your bill or let you know why we cannot. We will try to give you an answer within 20 working days. You can check My Account for updates.
