Apply for a death related exemption (Class F)

A property may be exempt from council tax if it is unoccupied and the person named on the council tax bill has died.

If a tenant dies and the property is left empty, the exemption will apply until the end of the tenancy.

If the owner dies and leaves the property empty, the property will be exempt from council tax.

Before you start

Apply if:

  • It has been unoccupied since the death of the person responsible for paying council tax
  • Probate or letters of administration have not been granted, or it has been six months since the grant of probate or letters of administration
  • Ownership of the property has not been transferred to a beneficiary or has been sold or otherwise occupied.

The exemption may be given whether the property is furnished or unfurnished.

  • Death certificate
  • Copy of the grant of probate
