You do not have to pay council tax for the first 14 days after a home becomes empty and unfurnished.
Before you start
- If you bought a home that was already unoccupied and unfurnished, you will not get a new 14-day discount. You can only get a discount for the days left in the first 14 days
- If the home has been empty and unfurnished for more than 14 days, you cannot get a discount
- Some empty homes might not have to pay council tax for longer periods of time. Check the rules for these homes before you fill in the form.

Uploading supporting documents
We may ask you to send us some documents. You can send:
- Word files (.docx)
- PDF files (.pdf)
- Excel files (.xlsx)
- Text files (.txt)
- Pictures from phones or tablets:
- JPEG (.jpg)
- GIF (.gif)
- PNG (.png)
As long as the file is smaller than 50MB. You cannot upload zip files.
What happens next
We will:
- check your claim and look at your documents
- try to give you an answer within 10 working days
- either reduce your bill or let you know why we cannot
