A free NHS Health Check can help you understand your risk of developing serious health conditions, including:
- heart disease
- stroke
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- some types of dementia
Many of these conditions can be prevented or managed if they are found early.
Who can have an NHS Health Check?
You can have a free NHS Health Check if you:
- are aged 40 to 74
- have not already been diagnosed with one of the conditions listed above
You can have a health check every 5 years.
What happens at the appointment?
The health check takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
A healthcare professional will:
- ask some simple questions about your health and medical history
- carry out a few quick health checks and tests
Your results
The results will help you and your GP understand your current health and whether you are at risk of developing certain health conditions.
You will also get advice on ways to improve or maintain your health.
Staying healthy
Making small changes to your lifestyle can reduce your risk of developing long-term health conditions.
This could include:
- being more active
- eating a healthier diet
- stopping smoking
