As part of our commitment to deliver at least 150 bike hangars in the borough by 2026, we installed 25 bike hangars in spring 2023 and 29 bike hangars in summer 2023.
Borough-wide, open consultation results (January 2023)
In autumn 2022, we asked local interest groups to help us develop the criteria for bike hangar locations.
In December and January 2023, a boroughwide online consultation took place. We received 349 responses.
From the consultation we know that most people agreed or strongly agreed with the following criteria:
- ability to park bikes near home when access to a garage or garden shed is limited (80%)
- the volume of requests from residents for a bike hangar at a particular location (70%)
- distribution of bike hangars in the borough (63%)
- number of bike thefts in the area (62%)
- wider community support for bike hangars (58%)
Locations have been chosen to meet these criteria.
As part of the consultation, residents were asked to suggest locations for a bike hangar. All locations suggested in the consultation have been added to the waitlist and will be assessed in future, again using these criteria.

Local location consultation process and results
Residents living near the proposed bike hangar receive a letter detailing our plans about the bike hangar. This allows residents to comment on the proposal.
All responses to the consultation are assessed before a decision is made. Reports for these consultations are listed below by date.
Following the local consultations, we will publish Traffic Management Orders for suitable locations. This is a 21-day statutory consultation. We will then consider any objections before we make a decision on installing the hangar. If we install the hangar, you can apply for a secure parking place through Cyclehoop, which costs £8.40 per year and is subsidised by the council.
