You can report an abandoned vehicle to the council. The vehicle can be any discarded car, van, lorry, motorbike, caravan, trailer or boat on public land. As tax discs are no longer required, please check if a vehicle is taxed on the GOV.UK website before reporting it.
You will need to give the following information:
- vehicle registration number
- exact location of vehicle
- make, model and colour of vehicle
- general condition of vehicle
- length of time it has been at the location
A council officer will inspect the vehicle and if it has been abandoned they will arrange for its removal. In some cases it may be necessary to make further enquiries which could mean a delay in the vehicle's removal. The council will not follow up anonymous reports of abandoned vehicles.
Landlords and managing agents
If you are a landlord or managing agent and a vehicle has been abandoned on land associated with dwellings under your control, you should request information about ownership of the vehicle from the DVLA (for a small fee) and contact the registered keeper with a view to recovering possession of your land. If there is no registered keeper or you are unable to contact them, please telephone the council for further advice on (020) 8825 6000.
Stopping removal of a vehicle
If your vehicle has been issued with a removal notice you will need to present proof of ownership, a vehicle registration document and proof of identity to the council within 24 hours of claiming the vehicle.
If this is not provided within the specified time the vehicle will be removed.
