Community toilet scheme

What is a community toilet scheme?
A community toilet scheme enables local businesses like cafes, restaurants and shops, to work with the council to make more clean, safe and accessible toilets. You can use the facilities during the businesses’ opening hours without the need to buy anything. Those taking part display a sticker in the window.

As part of the scheme, businesses are paid to allow members of the public to use their toilets. This helps shops provide a clean, attended facility that's in their best interest to keep maintained.

Where and for how long will the scheme run for?
The scheme was piloted in Hanwell for two years from March 2011 and has now proved successful in other areas, including Acton, Central Ealing, Greenford, South Ealing, Southall and West Ealing.

What about wheelchair access and baby changing facilities?
The businesses taking part in the pilot scheme may in some cases offer these facilities, but if not, will be encouraged to make alterations to their toilet facilities.

What if  the community toilets are not clean?
The businesses will maintain the community toilets and it is in their interest to  keep a certain standard, as their customers as well as local shoppers will use it. Any issues should be taken up directly with the individual business. There will be regular monitoring of the participating community toilets and if the facility does not meet a certain standard, the business will be taken off the community toilet scheme.

What if the business owner does not allow me to use the toilet facilities?
Use of the community toilet will be at the discretion of the management and in exceptional circumstances, entry may be refused.  If you think that the participating business is not keeping to the community toilet scheme, please contact customer services on (020) 8825 6000 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).
