Public toilets

Community toilet scheme

A community toilet scheme allows local businesses like cafes, restaurants and shops, to work with the council to provide clean, safe and accessible toilets.

You can use the facilities during business opening hours without the need to buy anything.

Businesses taking part will display a sticker in their window.

As part of the scheme, businesses are paid to allow members of the public to use their toilets.

This helps shops provide a clean, attended facility that's in their best interest to keep maintained.

The scheme was piloted in Hanwell and has now proved successful in other areas, including Acton, Central Ealing, Greenford, South Ealing, Southall and West Ealing.

Wheelchair access and baby changing facilities

Businesses taking part in the pilot scheme may offer these facilities, but if not, will be encouraged to make alterations to their toilet facilities.

Cleaning community toilets

Businesses will maintain the community toilets to a certain standard, as their customers as well as local shoppers will use them.

Any issues should be taken up directly with the individual business.

There will be regular monitoring of the community toilets taking part and if the facility does not meet a certain standard, the business will be taken off the community toilet scheme.

If a business owner does not allow me to use the toilet facilities

Use of the community toilet is at the discretion of the management and in exceptional circumstances, entry may be refused.

If you think that a business is not keeping to the community toilet scheme, contact customer services on 020 8825 6000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
