Highways service standards

The response times below show how quickly we aim to inspect, make safe or respond to reported highway issues and applications.

Street lighting

  • Dangerous street lighting (within 1 hour)
    • Missing door covers, exposed wires, knocked-down lighting posts and damaged bollards.
    • Repairs may take longer if replacement equipment is needed.
  • Flickering street lights or lights that stay on (within 5 working days)
  • Street lights needing a replacement post or light unit (within 15 working days)
  • Street lights that are completely out (within 25 working days)
    • Electrical disconnection and reconnection may add up to 10 additional working days.

Drainage and flooding

  • Blocked gullies (within 3 days)
  • Keys or mobile phones lost in a gully (within 2 hours)
  • Highway flooding (within 2 hours of rainfall ending)

Road safety

  • Faulty temporary traffic signals (passed to the contractor within 2 hours)
    • We can only pass reports to the relevant contractor or utility company and cannot carry out repairs ourselves.
  • Missing, damaged or dislodged manhole covers (made safe within 2 hours)
  • Broken, uneven or dislodged paving and kerbstones (inspection within 1 week)
  • Potholes on roads and footways (inspection within 1 week)
  • Damaged street furniture (inspection within 1 week)
    • Including bollards, barriers and signs.
  • Faded or worn road markings (inspection within 1 week)

Applications and licences

  • Temporary traffic orders (processed within 8 weeks)
  • New directional road signs (decision within 8 weeks)
  • New vehicle crossover applications (decision within 4 weeks)
  • Approved vehicle crossovers (installed within 8 weeks of payment)
  • Hoarding and scaffolding licences (processed within 4 weeks)
    • If approved, a licence will be issued within this timeframe.
