Solar PV panels

Solar PV systems capture the sun's energy and convert it to electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. The panels are usually mounted on a south facing roof with no overshadowing (by buildings, chimneys or trees, for example). The cells convert the sunlight into free electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. PV cells do not need direct sunlight to work - you can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day. As the electricity is not stored, it is only generated and usable during daylight hours. You can therefore achieve most benefit by choosing to use electrical appliances during the day.

Solar hot water systems

Solar hot water systems (also known as solar thermal) can provide up to 60% of your hot water* when correctly installed. They consist of one or more solar panels on your roof that are easily connected to your existing water system, providing free hot water from the sun, as long as you have an appropriate hot water storage cylinder.

This is one of the technologies that can be subsidised through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
