Data protection complaints

Examples of data protection complaints

You can make a complaint about data protection if:

  • you think your personal information has not been kept safe
  • you are finding it hard to get a copy of your personal information
  • your information was not collected in a fair or legal way

When you should complain

Please tell us about your concern as soon as you can. We may not look into complaints that are made too late.

You should contact us within 3 months of your last contact with the council about the issue.

How to complain

To make a complaint, email dataprotection@ealing.gov.uk and tell us clearly what has happened.

Include anything that helps us find your information, such as your name, account number or reference number.

We may ask you to provide ID if we do not already have this.

Complaints made for someone else

You can make a complaint for another person. We will need proof that you are allowed to act for them. This could be a power of attorney or a signed letter giving you permission.

When will I get a response?

We will send you an acknowledgement within 30 days of receiving your complaint.

Updates on progress

We will keep you updated on how the investigation is going. If we think it will take a long time, we will let you know.

Outcome

We will send you our response as soon as we can.

Complaining to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). You may also choose to take the matter to court.

The ICO expects you to give us a chance to fix the problem before you contact them.
