Ceremonies

Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies

If you are planning to get married or form a civil partnership in the UK, there are legal preliminaries that must be completed before the ceremony can take place.

You may need give a notice of intention before getting married.

Where can I get married?

A ceremony can take place in:

  • a register office
  • an approved premises
  • a registered building
  • a church or chapel of the Church of England or Church in Wales
  • a naval, military or air force chapel registered for marriage
  • at the residence of a housebound or detained person

Ealing borough has a list of approved premises.

This list may change regularly.

If your desired venue is not on our list, please contact the venue directly to find out if they are officially registered for legal marriages before contacting us.

Apart from The Brentham Club, the fee you pay online is for the registrars to attend your ceremony and does not include venue hire fees.

If you want to have a ceremony in a registered building, a church or chapel of the Church of England or Church in Wales, please contact the person in charge of the building. Talk to them about the date and time of your ceremony and confirm they are registered for marriage.

You will need to book a ceremony

Marriages at all marriage venues, except The Brentham Club, need to be booked with the venue and online with Ealing register office.

All approved premises charge a room hire fee that must be paid before you book your ceremony online.

You will need to order marriage/civil partnership certificates online once you are married/civil partnered.

For a marriage at the Brentham Club, please select The Brentham Club from the pick list to see their availability and to book. There will be no additional venue hire fees to pay. You will just need to order marriage/civil partnership certificates online once you are married/civil partnered.

If you are getting married in a religious venue and you have been informed that you need a registrar to attend your wedding, please email registrarsmanagement@ealing.gov.uk to arrange.

See our fees and charges for information

Deposit and cancellations

A deposit is payable at the time of booking. If you attend the appointment, the deposit will be used towards payment for the service.

The full fee for the ceremony must be paid 6 weeks before the date of the ceremony.

Pay balance

If you need to cancel or amend your ceremony, your fee may be retained and an additional fee may be applied.

What happens after the ceremony?

The couple and their witnesses no longer sign a marriage register during the ceremony.

They sign a marriage schedule instead and must be digitised to create an online register entry - rather than a physical one.

Since a marriage certificate is a certified copy of the marriage entry, a marriage certificate cannot be issued until the marriage is registered on our electronic system.

Marriage certificates will no longer be issued at the marriage ceremony. They will be posted out via recorded delivery to a home address.

The charge for this copy is £11 and can be ordered online after the ceremony.

You can order as many copies as you need. All copies will be posted to you.
