Giving notice to quit
If you want to end your tenancy, you need to give 4 weeks notice. This is what your tenancy agreement says.
Give notice to quit your tenancy
What happens next?
You will need to pay rent up to the date the notice period expires. The notice period will end on the last Sunday of the 4 week period.
If you:
- hand in your keys during the notice period, rent charges will stop at the end of the notice period
- hand in your keys after the notice period has ended, you will be charged rent up to the end of the week when the keys were received or until Ealing Council changes the locks
Keys must be returned before the end of the rent week (Monday to Sunday) to stop charges, but you can still hand them in before midday on a Monday to prevent that week's rent charge.
Housing benefit
If you get housing benefit, contact the housing benefit team to make sure you are entitled to benefit for the notice period.
Rent account
If you owe rent, you can clear the balance or contact your rent officer to discuss setting up a payment plan.
If your account is in credit, the council will check for any outstanding overpayments of housing benefit. Once checked, and the tenancy has ended, a refund will be issued.
When a tenant dies
The next of kin or representative must tell the council as soon as it is known that a tenant has died.
