Handyperson service

If you are vulnerable, elderly or disabled, we can help with small household jobs in your home through our handyperson service.

This service is discretionary. This means we can only offer support if you meet the criteria and if funding is available.

The service is run by Ealing Council’s Home Improvement Agency.

Who can use the service

You can apply if one or more of the following applies to you:

  • you are aged 60 or over and not in paid work
  • you are disabled
  • you are a single parent who receives an income related benefit and is living with children under 16
  • you are a carer and meet one of the criteria above

Who cannot use the service

You cannot use this service if any adult in your home is working or able to do the tasks you are asking for. If an adult in your home can safely do the task, they are expected to do it themselves.

This is also because the expectation is that your household has access to financial or practical support.

What we can help with

We can support you with small jobs, such as:

  • replacing lightbulbs
  • setting thermostats and timers
  • installing grab rails and handrails
  • fitting smoke or carbon monoxide alarms
  • unblocking sinks, basins or toilets
  • securing loose tiles or dangerous carpets
  • giving basic energy efficiency advice
  • minor security jobs, such as changing locks or fitting key safes
  • facilitating hospital discharges by moving furniture (not disposal)
  • assembling small flat pack furniture
  • changing tap washers (not plumbing work)

What we cannot do

We cannot do:

  • major plumbing, electrical, gardening, maintenance or building work
  • any work you do not have the legal right to carry out (for example, if you do not own the property and do not have permission)

What you need to provide

You must provide:

  • all materials needed for the job (you must supply or pay for these)
  • permission or proof that you have the legal right to do the work if you are not the owner
  • agreement to a short survey (if needed) so we can check for hazards or other work needed

Visit limits and conditions

  • each visit lasts up to 90 minutes
  • you can have up to 3 visits in 12 months, or up to 6 visits if a carer lives with you
  • you must meet all eligibility rules
  • grants can be refused, withdrawn or stopped at any time because the service depends on available funding

This page is general guidance. We may update it if policies, laws or funding change. Please check with the service directly.
