Social media acceptable use guidelines

Ealing Council uses social media to share information and engage with residents. We welcome their input and encourage you to join the conversation.

At the same time, the council is responsible for keeping its channels safe, respectful and factually accurate. This means the council’s staff may remove comments that are deemed offensive or inappropriate and, in rare cases, block accounts that repeatedly breach these guidelines.

By engaging with the council on social media, you agree to comply with these guidelines, as well as those of the platform you are using.

What to expect from the council

The council’s official social media accounts are as follows:

Listening: the council aims to read all messages and respond where possible or appropriate (responses would not be given to rhetorical questions, for instance). If you need a response about a service, please contact the council’s customer services through the appropriate channels, during standard working hours.

The council’s team promises to be human and polite.

It will publish content that is factually accurate.

Political neutrality means it is not possible to engage with, or respond to, party-political content.

What the council expects from you

The council asks that you treat others with respect. The following behaviours are not acceptable:

  • swearing and offensive language
  • sexism
  • misogyny
  • racism
  • homophobia
  • transphobia
  • ageism

  • inciting hate or harm (for example, discrimination based on protected characteristics)
  • false information
  • harassment
  • threats
  • personal or defamatory comment about individuals, including council staff and councillors
  • spamming with content unrelated to council business

The council may hide or delete content that it considers offensive, inappropriate or misleading.

Accounts that repeatedly breach these guidelines may be muted or blocked.

Threats, harassment and abuse will be reported to the police.

The council will not notify users directly when they are blocked and will not discuss individual moderation decisions publicly.

Sharing malicious or offensive content may constitute an offence under the Malicious Communications Act.

If you are blocked from interacting with the council on a social media platform and believe the action to be unfair or a mistake, you can contact us by email with details for us to review.

This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains up to date.
