Biodiverse front gardens and balconies competition

Competition terms and conditions 2024

1.    This competition is run by Cultivating Ealing (CE) (the organiser) together with Ealing Council.

2.    The competition is open to residents of the London Borough of Ealing, England.

3.    There will be prizes for first, second and third places in each category.

4.    Entrants can enter in one of the 6 following categories:

  • a. small front gardens
  • b. large front gardens
  • c. micro garden and balconies (including ground floor and narrow boat)
  • d. edible front garden
  • e. street or community garden
  • f. driveway transformation

5.    Deadline to enter the competition is 23:59 on Sunday 14 July 2024. Entries submitted after this date will not be eligible for inclusion in the competition.

6.    No responsibility can be accepted by the organiser for entries that are not received for any reason.

7.    Eligibility criteria:

  • a. Entrants must not earn their living by designing or maintaining gardens for money.
  • b. In the case of a community or street garden this must be maintained by local residents and not by any management company or professional gardener
  • c. The garden must be a front or communal or street garden, and not a private back garden and should be visible from the pavement.

8.    Any entrants breaching the eligibility criteria will be disqualified.

9.    All entrants are expected to act fairly and in the good spirit of the competition.

10.    By entering, the entrant confirms that information supplied about the garden in the entry form is correct and accurate to the best of the entrant’s knowledge.

11.    By entering, the entrant accepts that their name, and an indication of the garden location, may be used in publicity for the competition by the organiser or Ealing Council. No private address will be disclosed in this publicity.

12.    To enter the competition, an entry form should be completed, and 3 photographs should be submitted (one close-up of a special feature and two wider shots of the garden). The entry form and photos can be uploaded on the biodiverse front gardens and balconies competition entry form. In the case of driveway transformation up to 6 photographs may be submitted and must show ‘before’ and ‘after’ the transformation, together with dates.

13.    It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure their contact details are accurate so they can be notified that they have won a prize.

14.    The gardens in each category will be shortlisted from the submitted photographs. The shortlisted gardens will then be visited in person by Cultivating Ealing’s judging team between July and August 2024. If the shortlisted garden cannot be accessed during these times, the garden will be removed from the shortlist.

15.    Photographs will be taken during the visit. 

16.    CE judges will judge the front garden or balcony using the following criteria:

  • a. Biodiversity in the garden – inclusion of wildflowers/ wild areas/ log piles/ wildlife corridors etc
  • b. Creative use of the available space
  • c. Effective use of recycled/upcycled materials. 
  • d. Healthy plants and variety of shrubs, flowers and trees which provide refuges for nesting birds
  • e. Design, planting and elements to encourage wildlife such as bee friendly plants
  • f.  Planting to provide natural food sources though the seasons - blossom/ flowers/ seeds/ fruit
  • g. Evidence of rainwater harvesting and/or pond 
  • h. Good use of colour to attract wildlife

17.    The winning entries will be chosen from all eligible entries submitted. All winners will be notified by email within 30 days of being selected as a winner. 

18.    The winner will be announced in September 2024 on the organiser’s social media and print platforms and also on those of our partners in this competition, ActForEaling and Ealing Council 

19.    All prizes must be claimed by the entrant within 12 months from the date of the organiser’s initial correspondence with the entrant.

20.    Prize details to be confirmed. 

21.    In the case of a community/street garden the prize will be presented to the named person completing the entry form on behalf of the group.

22.    The organiser’s decisions regarding all matters relating to the competition are final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the selection of winners. 

23.    By participating in the competition, the entrant grants the organiser perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to use all images submitted for the competition, and those taken at the judging event, in all media whether now existing or hereinafter invented, including the organiser’s publications, websites and social media channels and those of our partners in this biodiverse front gardens and balconies competition, ActForEaling and  Ealing Council 

24.    In the event of circumstances outside the reasonable control of the organiser, or otherwise where fraud, abuse, and/or an error (human or computer) affects, or could affect, the proper operation of this competition, or the awarding of prizes, and only where circumstances make this unavoidable, the organiser reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions or cancel the competition at any stage but will always endeavour to minimise the effect to participants in order to avoid undue disappointment.

25.    The organiser reserves the right to verify all entries including but not limited to asking for address and identity details (which they must provide within 14 days).  The organiser reserves the right to refuse to award a prize or withdraw prize entitlement and/or refuse further participation in the competition and disqualify the participant where there are reasonable grounds to believe there has been a breach of these terms and conditions or any instructions forming part of this competition’s entry requirements. The organiser reserves the right to refuse to award a prize where a participant has gained unfair advantage in participating in the competition or won using fraudulent means. The organiser will be the final arbiter in any decisions, and these will be binding, and no correspondence will be entered into in relation to this clause.

26.    The organiser assumes no liability to the full extent permitted by law for any loss, damage or injury occurring to the entrant and those participating in the competition, arising from the entrant’s entry into the competition, or occurring arising from their acceptance of a prize. 

27.    Entry into the competition shall be deemed as an acceptance of these terms and conditions.
