Building and fire safety for Ealing Council tenants and leaseholders

Electrical safety

It is really important to look after your electrical equipment. Electric shocks and fires caused by electrical faults are a major cause of injury and can cause death.

Leads

  • leads should be free from cuts, fraying and damage
  • be careful not to overload extension leads
  • if you are using an extension lead, make sure it is fully uncoiled whilst using

Plugs

  • plugs should fit tightly into sockets
  • plug casings should be free from cracks and chips
  • watch out for burn marks or signs of overheating
  • none of the pins should be bent

Sockets

  • sockets should be free from cracks or other damage
  • check sockets for burn marks and signs of overheating
  • make sure they are properly secured to the wall
  • make sure the switches work properly

Chargers

  • fake chargers are often made with poor quality components that fail to meet UK safety regulations. This means they can cause injury, electric shocks and even fires. This is because different devices require different levels of charge
  • branded chargers are specifically designed for a particular device. Fake chargers run the risk of putting too much energy into a device, causing the battery to overheat

Top tips for electrical safety

  • always make sure electrical appliances have a British or European safety mark when you buy them
  • do not buy cheap counterfeit chargers for items that use lithium batteries
  • empty fluff regularly from tumble dryers in line with manufacturer’s instructions
  • hair straighteners can get extremely hot – always switch them off and leave them to cool on a heatproof surface
  • try to keep to one plug per socket, especially for high powered appliances like washing machines
  • register your white goods – it could save your life if a product is recalled for safety reasons. You can check if a product is recalled: www.whitegoodsafety.com/product-recalls
  • check your childrens' chargers and electrical equipment regularly to make sure it is in good condition

Important message from the London Fire Brigade

The majority of fires related to e-bikes and e-scooters have happened in homes. The fires are often caused when charging batteries. Batteries can get warm during their use and should be allowed to cool down before plugging in to charge.

Top tips for keeping safe whilst charging e-bikes and e-scooters at home

  • store your e-bike or e-scooter in your property on a flat, non-flammable surface near a smoke or heat alarm
  • batteries should always be charged on a hard, flat surface
  • never block escape routes with e-bikes or e-scooters
  • store and charge them somewhere away from a main through route or exit
  • always follow manufacturers’ instructions when charging
  • never leave the device unattended whilst charging
  • do not leave on charge while you are asleep
  • always unplug your charger once it has finished charging
  • always use the correct charger for your battery and buy any replacements from a reputable seller
  • do not attempt to modify or tamper with the battery
  • check the battery for damage before charging. If there is any damage present, do not charge
  • do not dispose of lithium-ion batteries in general household or recycling waste
