Fisher's Lane closure to motor traffic except buses

Why close Fisher’s Lane?

Ealing, in line with the Mayor of London, has ambitious objectives to promote active travel in response to the climate emergency.

Fisher’s Lane was closed to all motor traffic (except buses) under a programme to create safe and accessible borough-wide cycle routes for all abilities. The closure of nearby Turnham Green Terrace made it urgent to ensure traffic did not simply divert via Fisher’s Lane. High traffic levels also impact bus journey times, as buses struggle to pass oncoming vehicles on the narrow road. Closing Fisher’s Lane therefore made the route quiet and attractive for cycling, as well as efficient for bus users.

Important design considerations

Fisher’s Lane was identified as the only railway crossing in the area suitable for upgrading as part of a high-quality cycle route linking East Acton to Chiswick, and potentially beyond, but only with reduced motor traffic. Even with Turnham Green Terrace open to through motor traffic, Fisher’s Lane would have too much motor traffic to make it attractive and safe for cyclists of all abilities.

Monitoring the Impact

The closure of Fisher’s Lane resulted in an immediate and substantial increase in cycle traffic, which has been maintained and continues to grow. The closure has also reduced bus journey times, while for pedestrians, using the carriageway has become a safe option. This especially benefits wheelchair users due to the level surface. There is currently no evidence that the closure caused more traffic congestion on South Parade, but there is evidence of increased traffic volume on Acton Lane when comparing data from 2017 and 2021.

Adjustments and future work

After initial criticism, the signage was independently assessed and found to be compliant with the rules. Nevertheless, some improvements were made in May 2021. Traffic volumes and congestion will continue to be monitored.
