Waste reduction and reuse

Why reduce and reuse?

In 2012/13 Ealing households produced a massive 96,000 tonnes of waste, 41% of which was recycled. Reducing the amount of waste we produce is just as important as recycling.

If we reduce and reuse our waste, we reduce the need for new resources which decreases our impact on the environment.

Recycling prevents waste going to landfill, which is very costly, by not producing waste we can reduce all the costs.

The waste hierarchy provides a sliding scale on the best way to deal with our waste

  • prevention
  • reduce
  • reuse
  • recycling
  • energy recovery
  • landfill

Ealing Council works with the west London boroughs of Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond-upon-Thames, to help residents reduce, reuse and minimise waste throughout west London.
