West Ealing South low traffic neighbourhood

West Ealing South (W13) area is a low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) that was introduced in late-August 2020, on an experimental basis, made possible with funding from Transport for London (TfL). There is significant concern that large numbers of people will drive in order to avoid contact with others on public transport due to social distancing measures. This could potentially lead to a large increase in rat-run traffic through this area.

Residents in this neighbourhood will start to see the benefits of better air quality, reduced volumes of through traffic in their neighbourhood, making it a safer, calmer and quieter environment for walking and cycling.

Description of the scheme

There will be a temporary installation of diagonal wooden planters, removeable bollards, camera enforcement, and accompanying signage at the following locations:

  • Grosvenor Road / Oaklands Road junction – diagonal closure
  • Coldershaw Road / Leighton Road/Elthorne Park Road junction – diagonal closure
  • Midhurst Road / Hessel Road junction – diagonal closure
  • Erlesmere Gardens / Salisbury Road junction – diagonal closure
  • Mayfield Avenue / Northcroft Road junction – diagonal closure
  • Midhurst Road / Woodstock Avenue / Mayfield Avenue junction – diagonal closure
  • Montague Avenue – full closure
  • Burns Road – full closure
  • Haslemere Avenue / Clitherow Avenue junction – diagonal closure
  • Seaford Road / Leighton Road junction, between Seaford Road and Northfields Avenue – diagonal closure
  • Haslemere Avenue near Midhurst Road junction – full closure on Haslemere Avenue

A School Street is being created around Oaklands Primary School on Oaklands Road. The following roads will be closed with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times (Monday-Friday 8.15-9.15am and 2.45-3.45pm). Cumberland Road, between the north-eastern kerb-line of Manton Avenue and its junction with Oaklands Road; Oaklands Road between its junction with Cumberland Road and its junction with Boston Road and Southfield Cottages. Resident permit vehicles are exempt from the restrictions and remain unaffected. The barrier will be moveable and managed by the school.

To enable to School Street and support social distancing, a one-way system is being introduced. This will operate in an anti-clockwise direction from Cumberland Road junction with Manton Avenue, towards Oaklands Road, in a general north-easterly direction. And on Oaklands Road, from Cumberland Road towards Boston Road.

The emergency services and refuse vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will remain unaffected and continue to have access through the road closures. All other vehicles may have to find alternative routes. Residents will continue to have access by car to their properties, but this may be via alternative directions.
