Installation of segregated 'pop up' cycle lanes

To facilitate more people cycling, Ealing was awarded £386,000 by Transport for London (TfL) and £100,000 by the Department of Transport (DfT) to install a series of 'pop up' segregated cycle lanes across the borough to provide an alternative mobility option at a time where public transport capacity is reduced. Getting more people on bikes is part of the council's wider ambitions, however it is even more important now than ever when alternative sustainable transport options may not be as regularly available.

The new segregated cycle lanes are designed to run alongside general traffic lanes and are separated by cycle wands, plastic posts which help clearly define the boundary to all road users.  Main roads were chosen as these are often the fastest and most direct routes, and therefore have higher levels of motor traffic, which can dissuade people from cycling.

The following pop up cycle lanes have been installed so far:

  • Sections of the westbound lane of the Vale, between Bromyard Avenue and Larden Road, and eastbound beside Acton Park
  • Northbound along Greenford Road between Uxbridge Road and Fleming Road
  • The following sections along the Uxbridge Road, at Ealing Common to the east of the A406 (North Circular) in both directions, and eastbound between the bus gate and Lower Boston Road, Hanwell.

The following schemes, which involve both wands and other interventions, have also been funded and will be delivered in the coming months:

The council consulted residents on the Uxbridge Road cycle improvements between Southall to Hanwell by 1 August 2021. The results of the consultation have been published.

In addition, bus lane hours on Uxbridge Road have been extended for the benefit of cyclists.

The following schemes have also been successful in securing funding from the DfT under the Active Travel Fund, (previously known as the Emergency Active Travel Fund). These schemes are now in development and plans will be available in early 2021. Affected residents will be consulted as part of the development process.
