The evolution of cinemas in Ealing
Ealing Central Library, Thursday 28 March, 5:30pm
As filmmaking flourished in the early 1900s, iconic cinema buildings emerged throughout the Ealing borough, each boasting distinctive designs and accommodating audiences of 300 up to 2,500. Yet, as the 1950-60s ushered in economic challenges and the dominance of television, cinemas faced decline. However, resilient communities began revitalizing these run-down or neglected cultural landmarks in the 1970s, repurposing or rebuilding them, thus ensuring their enduring legacy in today's landscape.
