NHS health checks

A free NHS Health Check can help you find out your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. These are common but often preventable diseases.

If you’re aged between 40 to 74 years-old, and have not already been diagnosed with one of these conditions, you are eligible for a free NHS health check once every five years.

Each health check takes around 20-30 minutes. It involves a few health tests and answering some easy questions about your medical history. The tests are quick, simple and carried out by a healthcare professional.

Your results will give you and your GP a clearer picture of your health, and how likely you are to develop one of the diseases mentioned above.  You will have time to discuss your results, and offered personalised advice on how to maintain or improve your health.

Certain changes to your lifestyle can lower your chances of developing a long term health condition, such as: moving moreeating better, and stopping smoking.
