Self-build and custom build register

Over the past year or so the government has published a series of measures intended to support the growth of self and custom build housing.

From the 1 April 2016 the Self-build and Custom House Building Act 2015 places a duty on local authorities to keep a register of interest in self and custom build housing. Collating this information will provide valuable information on demand for self-build and custom housebuilding in the borough and will form a key part of our evidence base informing future local plan preparation.

What is self-build and custom build?

There are various routes to building your own home. Self-build usually means that you are directly involved in organising the design and construction of your home. Custom build usually means working with a specialist developer to help deliver your home.

Who is eligible to be entered on the register?

Applicants must meet all of the eligibility criteria for entry on the register. Each individual applicant and every member of an association of individuals that applies for entry on the register must be:

  • aged 18 or older;
  • a British citizen, a national of EEA state other than the United Kingdom, or a national of Switzerland; and
  • seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in the borough to build a house to occupy as that individual's sole or main residence.

When applying to be entered on a register, individuals who wish to register as an association must appoint a member or officer to act as the lead contact for the purposes of correspondence between the association and the relevant authority.

If registering as a couple or as a group of the same household, one member of the couple or household should be nominated as the primary contact.

How we will use information from the register

By registering your interest this will allow the council to better understand the demand for self and custom build housing in the borough. The detailed information collated will help us understand the number, size, type and affordability of self-build homes needed in Ealing.

In preparing the register the council is making no commitment to provide self-build or custom build plots.

Personal details included on the register will not be made public, but anonymised headlined data extracted from it may be published (i.e. overall numbers of registered entries, geographical areas of interest etc).

If you would like to register interest, please complete the registration form and return to: weakei@ealing.gov.uk
