Allotment rules

Fowl (hens and ducks)

Fowl have long been part of the allotment scene and are welcome on appropriate sites. If you wish to keep hens or ducks, first get permission of the site manager. Note that cockerels are not allowed on allotments because of the noise they make. Specific fowl keeper rules apply, in addition to the basic rules.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 makes it an offence to fail to:

  • Provide a suitable environment for the birds
  • Provide a suitable diet and fresh water
  • Allow the birds to exhibit normal behaviour
  • House social birds with others
  • Protect them from pain, injury, suffering and disease.
