Transition Town initiatives

The Transition Towns movement is an international network of community initiatives concerned with adapting to the challenges of peak oil and climate change.

Ealing Transition
Ealing Transition is formed by ordinary members of the community concerned with these challenges  - and aims to act as a focal point for the people of Ealing to exchange ideas and skills. You can contact them by email at steering@ealingtransition.org.uk or visit the Ealing Transition website

Southall Transition
Southall Transition is a new initiative seeking to work from the grass-roots in encouraging local people to think and act together in a more sustainable way. For more information go to the Southall Transition Southall Transition website.

The Superhomes website illustrates homes across the UK that have been converted to eco homes. They host open days to help you find out how to:

  • make your home eco-friendly, sustainable, low carbon
  • achieve minimal energy bills with improved comfort
  • start green living and make an eco-retrofit succeed

One of the homes included is in Ealing - Willow Road.

PassivHaus retrofit

Ealing Transition member, Dora Varszegi, has started a blog  “West London Transition Homes” where she aims to collect and put together information for people wanting to radically upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes. She has started with posts about the PassivHaus retrofit* of her family's home in South Ealing. The family now uses 90% less gas than before the refit, and haven’t used the central heating for 18 months yet their home is a constant and comfortable 22°C.

See Ealing Council’s ’Around Ealing’ article (January 2014, page 6) for an interview with Dora, including an extended interview on video.

*Passivhaus buildings are built according to principles developed by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany to provide high levels of comfort and air quality, while using minimal energy for heating and cooling.
